Bonus: Sample Response
We all like to think of ourselves as civilised human beings, part of a loose alliance of technologically and morally advanced nations. But are we? Even now, death sentences are carried out across the world in these so called advanced nations. I do not believe there is a moral argument for capital punishment, but am open to considering there might be a practical one.
Some crimes are considered to be so vile, and criminals who commit them so dangerous, that they cannot ever be allowed to rejoin society. The choices then are to either put an end to the risk of those criminals ever being allowed to rejoin society, or to keep them secured while feeding and housing them for the rest of their lives.
When criminals are sentenced to death, it is a result of a thorough police investigation, a trial where, at least in the West, the burden is on the prosecution to prove beyond doubt that the accused person committed the crime. With modern DNA testing, investigation techniques and crime labs, together with the participation of jury trials, it is considered that the chances of mistakes being made are miniscule. In addition, consideration of closure for the family of victims, endless appeal procedures and protection of society as a whole are taken into account before sentence is carried out.
On the other hand, mistakes can still be made, particularly when the accused is BAME, leading to accusations that capital punishment affects black and minority groups disproportionately. As a deterrent, capital punishment doesn’t seem to work, according to Stanford University Law Professor John J. Donohue III’s research, which indicates that levels of homicide are similar in both Canada, with no death sentence, and the USA, where there is one both federally and across various states.
Clearly, it is more expensive to keep prisoners fed and housed and observe their human rights while at the same time imposing punishment and keeping society safe. However, it is, in my opinion, morally repugnant to extinguish a life on the grounds of expense, no matter what the crime.
