Abortion is one of the most hotly debated issues in modern society and it is rare to see arguments based on data and research, rather than emotion. I will admit to coming to the debate from a position based on women’s rights to autonomy, but am open to examining the arguments from both sides.
The pro life camp, points to a belief that the moment a woman becomes pregnant is also the moment her body is no longer human in that any residual humanity resides solely in the foetus. This may seem an extreme position, but pro life arguments assert that the foetus is human and deserves protection, while at the same time appearing to overlook the humanity and right to protection of the person gestating it. This faction emphasise that women who have had abortions are more likely to become depressed and/or commit suicide and include the implication that unplanned pregnancies are a matter of careless lifestyle choices, rather than any lack of healthcare, social support or availability of contraception.
The pro choice contingent, on the other hand, point to World Health Organisation (WHO) reports indicating that women have abortions whether or not the procedure is legal, safe or carried out by medical professionals. Further, that significantly more women die or experience later health issues when abortion is illegal or unavailable.
The CDC indicated in 2014 that fewer than 10% of women have more than one abortion. The reference article above does not indicate whether those women had readily available access to reproductive healthcare.
In view of the above, the fundamental issues on this subject seem to relate more to gender equality and reproductive healthcare than abortion alone. The abortion question could therefore be solved, in my opinion, by better education around gender equality and universal access to effective reproductive healthcare.
